Mitchel-King was an ever-present for Crewe this season before his injury
Crewe Alexandra defender Mat Mitchel-King could be back in action by the end of September after stepping up his return from a back injury.
Mitchel-King, 26, has not played since being forced off in the first half of Crewe's 4-1 defeat by Stockport.
Assistant manager Steve Davis told BBC Radio Stoke: "He's working on his back constantly and he just needs to build his fitness up now.
"I'm sure he'll be involved within the next couple of weeks."
The former Histon captain, who joined from the non-league outfit in the summer, started every game before his injury on 1 September and Davis admitted he has been missed.
"Mat was one of our most consistent players and not having him in the side was a big loss to us," added Davis.
"He's a good leader and he's well respected by the players."
Meanwhile, defender Danny O'Donnell played the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 victory for the reserves over Stockport on Tuesday as he continued his comeback from injury.
Young midfielder James Bailey played half of the match at Crewe's training complex at Reaseheath.
