Billy Jones was appointed Crewe captain back in July
Crewe Alexandra captain Billy Jones is confident his side can be be among those in the League Two promotion race.
The Alex are aiming to bounce back at the first attempt having been relegated from League One last season.
Jones told BBC Radio Stoke: "If we can start well that will settle us down, and we will then have the confidence to push on."
Crewe will hand football league debuts to new signings Patrick Ada and Mat Mitchel-King on Saturday.
The opening game of the new season at home to Dagenham and Redbridge will be the first-ever meeting between the two clubs.
Crewe are quoted at 16/1 to win League Two and Jones added: "We have trained extremely hard and I believe we are still a team that will be feared in this division, despite our manager only having a small squad of players to work with."
Gudjon Thordarson has no injury problems ahead of the game at the Alexandra Stadium and has decided to hand Spurs on-loan keeper David Button the goalkeeping jersey ahead of Steve Collis and Adam Legzdins.
"David has been very good since he arrived here, we have been pleased with him and the way he has approached things," Thordarson said.
Meanwhile, former Crewe goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson has signed for Blue Square Premier club Barrow after refusing a deal at Port Vale.
Commentary of Crewe Alexandra's first match of the League Two season against Dagenham and Redbridge on Saturday can be found on BBC Radio Stoke 1503AM with Graham McGarry and Peter Morse from 1500 BST.
