New Port Vale manager Micky Adams has said fortune will have to be on his side if the club are to improve on last season's finish of 18th in League Two.

Adams put six players on the transfer list on Thursday to try and generate funds for new signings.

He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I came into the football club when the squad of players was already assembled.

"It will be a tough season for us. It's a big rebuilding job for everyone and I just want the fans to be patient."

Adams continued: "You can only have a winning mentality if you win games. But the fans will forgive anything if they see lads going out there and giving it their all.

"They're not daft, they know it will be a difficult season for us, but we'll try our best."

Danny Glover, Steve Thompson, David Howland, Danny Edwards, Ross Davidson and Luke Prosser have all been made available for transfer by the Vale boss.

He is also trying to conclude short-term deals for Colchester striker Jamie Guy and former Hereford left-back Kris Taylor.

Meanwhile, former Crewe goalkeeper Stuart Tomlinson has signed for Blue Square Premier club Barrow after refusing a deal at Port Vale.

Commentary of Port Vale's first match of the League Two season against Rochdale on Saturday can be found on BBC Radio Stoke 94.6FM with Matt Sandoz and Mick Cullerton from 1500 BST.
