My best is yet to come, says Zola

Calvin Zola
Former Newcastle United trainee Zola signed for Crewe from Tranmere

Calvin Zola is keen to show Crewe supporters that he can be the man to lead the club's attack this season.

The Congolese international, 24, scored just five league goals in his first campaign with the Alex, who were relegated to League Two in May.

"I believe in my abilities and I think the goals will come if I keep working like I have done in pre-season," he told BBC Radio Stoke.

"I'm positive that this season will be good to me and I can prove my worth."

He added: "We're all working hard for the start of the season and we're all looking forward to it.

"We've got a very strong team, from the goalkeeper right through to the strikers, and I can't see any reason why we can't make a good start on 8 August [against Dagenham and Redbridge]."

Zola joined Crewe from Tranmere for £200,000 in July 2008 and scored a hat-trick on his home debut in a friendly against Hull City.

The former Newcastle United trainee then scored three times in his first six league starts for the Alex, but struggled for the rest of the campaign.

His last goal came in the 1-0 victory over Colchester on 14 March, Crewe's last league win.
