Crewe boss backing underachievers

Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson wants Calvin Zola, Joel Grant and Anthony Elding to justify the combined £500,000 the club paid for them last summer.

Zola joined the Alex from Tranmere for £200,000, Grant moved from Aldershot for £140,000, while Elding left Leeds for a fee of £160,000.

However, none of the trio was able to command a regular first-team place.

"I believe they will come back reborn when the new season starts," Thordarson told BBC Radio Stoke.

Elding, who scored 26 goals in 43 starts for Stockport before joining Leeds, scored three goals in his first month with the Alex but spent the end of the season on loan at Lincoln City.

Grant and Zola spent much if the season in and out of the Crewe side but Thordarson believes there is more to come from all three players.

"Some of the players the club brought in last summer still have to prove what they are capable of doing and it will be a big test for them," said the Icelander.

"I honestly think that some of them have got more in their locker."
