Thordarson relishes survival task

Gudjon Thordarson admits that he is enjoying the challenge of trying to keep Crewe Alexandra in League One.

"I've enjoyed the test from the very beginning," the Crewe manager told BBC Radio Stoke. "I always like challenges and I'm ready to challenge myself.

"I've got my own agenda to try and improve Crewe Alexandra on the pitch."

The Alex, who have not won in eight games, could find themselves in the relegation zone before they play away at Stockport on Friday.

A mere point for Northampton on Tuesday night at home to Scunthorpe would see the Alex drop back into the relegation zone with just two games left.

Their last victory came at Colchester on 14 March, when striker Calvin Zola scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. And they have now scored just twice in their last five games.

But they have still made progress since Thordarson took over on Christmas Eve.

Crewe were then bottom of League One, having picked up just 13 points from their first 21 games.

And, despite their recent falterings, Thordarson has an overall record of eight wins, seven draws and eight defeats from his 23 matches in charge.

He even won February's manager of the month award after guiding the team out of the relegation zone and clear of the bottom four.
