Murphy is another product of Crewe's successful academy set-up
League One strugglers Crewe Alexandra have rewarded talented teenage midfielder Luke Murphy with a new three-year contract with the club.
The 19-year-old has broken into the first team this season, scoring twice in five senior starts for the Alex.
He told BBC Radio Stoke: "I was eating my dinner when [technical director] Dario Gradi called me in and handed me an envelope with a new contract in it.
"It was quite a shock and it feels good, but the hard work starts now."
The teenager from Rode Heath joins another youngster Danny Shelley, who has signed a new contract until 2011.
Murphy is a product of the famous Crewe academy and was voted the supporters' player of the month for January.
Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson has said Murphy deserved his new contract as a reward for his impressive start to life in the Football League.
"I think Murphy is a player that can make a living in the game. He is an excellent boy as well and he is always looking to improve.
"So I look forward to working with him in the future," the former Iceland national-team boss said.
