Thordarson was appointed Crewe manager in December
Crewe manager Gudjon Thordarson has said he will explore all his options as he looks to improve the Alex's defence.
Only Cheltenham Town have conceded more goals than the Railwaymen in League One this season.
Thordarson told BBC Radio Stoke: "Obviously we need to be stronger at the back.
"We can do that tactically or by bringing players in and maybe we need to a do a bit of both. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet."
The Alex have been linked with a move for Stockport County centre-half Gareth Owen, who has just completed a loan spell with League Two side Port Vale.
"I'm sniffing around at the minute and assessing my options," said Thordarson.
"Nothing has been decided and I have to take finances and what's available into account.
"There's lots of things to be considered, especially what will be best for the balance of the squad."
Crewe currently sit bottom of League One, seven points from safety.
