Crewe Alexandra are among several clubs monitoring the form of Chester striker Ryan Lowe, BBC Sport understands.
Lowe joined City from the Alex in July but, with Chester up for sale, they may have to cash in on their prize asset.
The 29-year-old is the struggling League Two side's top scorer with nine goals so far this season.
And, with Crewe bottom of League One, caretaker manager Dario Gradi is believed to see Lowe as the answer to his side's own goalscoring problems.
Lowe scored 17 goals in 57 starts for Crewe during a two-year stint at Gresty Road between 2006 and 2008.
He is currently in his second spell with Chester and scored the first goal in Saturday's 2-0 win over Notts County.
