Crewe caretaker manager Dario Gradi has said relegation to League Two would not be a disaster for the Alex.
The Railwaymen currently lie bottom of League One with 12 points from 20 games, having won just twice in their last 15 outings.
Gradi told BBC Radio Stoke: "We'd still be solvent, with some good players and we'd still be running an academy so it's not the end of the world.
"Life would go on, it just wouldn't be as comfortable as it once was."
Gradi continued: "The lower the standard, the easier it is to put the kids in, but I'm not advocating we try it.
"It is not for me to be thinking about the consequences of going down, we need to be thinking about what we can do to stay up."
Gradi was appointed as caretaker boss at the Alexandra Stadium after Steve Holland was relieved of his duties in November.
Holland had taken over from Gradi in the summer of 2007, with the 67-year-old taking up the role of technical director at the Alexandra Stadium.
"I'm not looking forward to going back to being technical director but I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I get there," added Gradi.
"There's a limit to the amount of time I can spend being the manager and someone coming in will be able to spend more time on the first team than I am."
