Platt left his role in charge of England Under-21s in 2004
Former England captain David Platt has turned down the chance to become Crewe Alexandra's new manager, reports BBC Radio Stoke.
The 42-year-old's refusal to take the job could lead to current caretaker manager Dario Gradi remaining in the role until the end of the season.
"The chairman and I are talking but at the moment we haven't a specific person in mind," said Gradi.
"If I can win games, that buys us time, but I don't want the job permanently."
Platt made over 100 appearances for the Alex between 1985 and 1988 before leaving to join Aston Villa for 200,000.
He went on to play for Arsenal and Italian sides Sampdoria, Bari and Juventus as well as winning 62 caps for England.
On retiring from playing he had spells in charge of Nottingham Forest and England Under-21s but is thought to have turned down an approach from the Crewe board to return to management.
