Colchester United full-back Alan Maybury has been told he can look for a another club by boss John Ward.
The 32-year-old former Republic of Ireland player, whose contract expires in 10 months, has played just three times for the U's in more than a year.
Ward told BBC Essex: "It might be a permanent or a loan move.
"I think something is on the horizon for him, hopefully for him he can get it organised and he can get his career cracking on."
The U's manager added: "I've allowed Alan to discuss with other clubs. He's a terrific pro and we'll see if that develops."
Ward did not rule put the possibility of releasing the right-back should he find a new club.
Maybury was a long-time understudy to Gary Kelly at Leeds United in the late 1990s and signed for Colchester on a free transfer 18 months ago.
