Colchester United are to offer Kem Izzet a new contract.
The midfielder's current deal expires at the end of this season and the U's are keen to sort out his future.
Izzet joined Colchester from Charlton on a free transfer in 2001 and has made more than 300 appearances for the League One club.
"I think Kem deserves a new contract and I plan to sit down with him and talk it through," manager Aidy Boothroyd told BBC Essex.
U's captain Magnus Okuonghae has already signed an extended deal despite only being in his first season with the club.
"We need to be proactive with players in terms of the ones we want to keep and those who need to further their careers elsewhere," added Boothroyd.
