Colchester chairman Robbie Cowling says he will take his time over finding a replacement for Geraint Williams.
Williams left the U's on Monday after just over two years as manager.
Cowling told BBC Essex: "I think we've got good people still at the helm and the important thing now is that we pick somebody really good.
"I never want to be a chairman that changes his managers like you change your socks - I want to find good people and work with them."
Williams is the first manager to leave his post since Cowling took over as chairman and he admitted it had been a tough decision for all involved.
"When you are in business sometimes it doesn't make things any more difficult, it just make them more unpleasant when you work with somebody you enjoy working with, which I did with Geraint," he said.
"But things have to be done and I have to stand up and be counted from my position."
Cowling also confirmed the club were looking to create an additional role of 'technical analyst' to work alongside the manager.
"One of the thing's we've identified in the club is that there's a lot of work for a manager to do," he explained.
"It's very difficult sometimes to do the stuff that is good for the long-term benefit for the club when there's three points to be won on a Saturday.
"So we're going to bring somebody in who can work with the manager and playing departments to help us analyse the things that we should be doing and could be doing that will be better for the club in the long term."
