Colchester United have signed Paul Reid after the defender cancelled his contract with Barnsley.

Reid, who can play in both defence and also midfield, spent four seasons with the Tykes and was captain when they won the League One Play-Off final in 2006.

The 26-year-old made only a handful of appearances for them last season and had one month on loan at Carlisle.

Reid is the club's third summer signing, following the arrival of defenders Matt Lockwood and Matt Heath.
