Sunderland and Northern Ireland under-21 international goalkeeper Trevor Carson has joined Chesterfield on a season-long loan.
Spireites manager Lee Richardson told BBC Radio Sheffield: "He's a goalkeeper that has been on our radar all summer.
"Roy Keane has allowed him to join us which we are grateful for. He comes with a good reputation and he'll put Tommy Lee under pressure."
The 20-year-old has yet to make a senior appearance for Sunderland.
Carson, who joined Sunderland in 2004 from Killyleagh Boys, has played 13 times for his country at Under-17 and Under-21 level.
