I can handle criticism - Carlisle defender Peter Murphy

Carlisle United defender Peter Murphy has shrugged off criticism he received prior to Tuesday's 1-0 win against Hartlepool United in League One.

The 30-year-old was part of the side that lost 4-3 at Brighton on Saturday, and conceded a last-minute winner to the divisional leaders.

"If I get the blame for goals, that's alright, I'm an experienced player," Murphy told BBC Radio Cumbria.

"I've been blamed for other things before and I can take it."

Murphy added: "The manager [Greg Abbott] stuck with me, I didn't feel I had anything to prove.

"If you play a bad pass, it's what you do next to not let it affect you, when things go against you it's how you react to them.

"You deal with these things and get on and try to do better the next time."

Meanwhile the former Blackburn defender hailed the camaraderie within Greg Abbott's squad after Tuesday's victory at Brunton Park.

"It shows what the team is, the team stays together, we always say there's a great team spirit," Murphy said.

"The young lads and the energy we've got in the team, it just goes to show what you can do when the team sticks together, and plays well."

Following his move to Carlisle United from Rovers in 2001, Murphy has scored 26 goals in almost 400 appearances.
