Falling attendances force Carlisle United budget cuts

Carlisle United

Falling attendances mean JPT Trophy finalists Carlisle United face budget cuts this summer.

Managing director John Nixon said the current Brunton Park average of around 5,200 is well below the club's break-even figure.

Nixon told BBC Radio Cumbria: "We are going to have to look at our cost base and we are going to have to make some further cuts."

"That's the reality of the whole thing and the reality of football."

It means we are going to have the run in a way the club can afford in relation to the number of fans coming through the gate

The Cumbrians are expected to get a significant financial boost from reaching this Sunday's Johnstones Paint Trophy Final against Southampton at Wembley. Around 21,000 Carlisle fans will make the trip to London at the weekend.

"We are now down to a fan base of around 5,200 plus for our league games." Nixon said.

"It means we are going to have the run in a way the club can afford in relation to the number of fans coming through the gate.

"We don't want to be one of the clubs that go into administration, we want to be a club that is successful, (that) is breaking even, that is continuing to build and we want the city to be proud of us."
