Carlisle United chief executive David Allen has defended the club's activity in the transfer window.
The League One Cumbrians have been criticised for not spending big following the recent sales of Keiren Westwood, Joe Garner and Simon Hackney.
"Any money from the sale of players is made available to Greg Abbott for players," he told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"We were hoping that other things were going to happen...so it wasn't like there was nothing going on."
Carlisle sold goalkeeper Westwood to Coventry City during the summer in a 750,000 deal, while striker Joe Garner moved to Nottingham Forest in a 1.14m move in July.
The Cumbrian also sold popular winger Simon Hackney to League One rivals Colchester United in a 100,000 deal last week.
"I think that a lot of people see us doing our best," Allen continued.
"Young Michael Burns has been signed, Graham Kavanagh has signed permanently on an 18-month deal, Michael Liddle's loan deal has been extended and Lewis Neal and Joe Anyinsah have come in.
We were hoping to get another couple of players and unfortunately that didn't happen, which is sometimes the way that it goes

"There were other things happening right up until the last minute, we were hoping to get another couple of players and unfortunately that didn't happen, which is sometimes the way that it goes. We are all very, very disappointed about that," he said.
The Cumbrians paid a transfer fee for one player - Joe Anyinsah, who joined from Preston for an undisclosed fee last month.
"We have now got the biggest wage bill that we have ever had at the club," Allen said.
"Obviously we are very, very disappointed with Saturday's performance (the 2-0 home defeat by Colchester) and there will be lots of people very frustrated about that. Nobody is saying that it is acceptable at all.
"However...it's not all doom and gloom. We have had some very, very dire performances and we know that we have got a bit to do but there has also been the excitement there," he added.
Carlisle currently lie 18th in League One, six points above the relegation places after going three games without a win.
"We are going to do our best with the club," Allen said. "We couldn't foresee the 11 matches that we only got one point out of.
"Since Greg has come on board, in the next 10 games he got 18 points so that is top of the table stuff isn't it?
"So we know that we have got a lot to do and we are just going to do what we can," he said.
Allen has also revealed that the club received no further offers for top scorer Danny Graham before the end of the transfer window.
Huddersfield Town had offered 250,000 for the former Middlesbrough forward but that was rejected by Carlisle.
Allen said: "There were no more bids for Danny, and we made it clear to Huddersfield that the offer that they did come up with was well short of what we valued him at.
"Greg made it very clear that he wanted to keep him, so as far as I am concerned that is all that happened."
The Cumbrians are currently in talks with Graham, who is out of contract in the summer, over a new deal at Brunton Park.
"Because of his age he can't just simply walk, but we see Danny Graham as a big part of the club and Greg will be talking to him shortly," Allen said.
"He has done well since that offer for him came in and we would put the price a lot higher than that, but while he is scoring goals for Carlisle United we want him at Carlisle United, and it is as simple as that."
