Carlisle United have released Tyrone Cameron and Ashley-Paul Robinson following trials with the club.
Former Fulham trainee Cameron, 18, made three first-team pre-season appearances while former Crystal Palace winger Robinson, 19, managed just 45 minutes.
"We said Ashley wasn't fit and wasn't right and I think that was massively apparent," Ward told BBC Radio Cumbria.
"He's got some ability but he didn't seem to have the right approach in my view so we have let him go."
Ward said he was impressed by Cameron's attitude during his two-week trial with the Cumbrians but felt the defender was not what he was currently looking for.

Carlisle manager John Ward
"Tyrone is a smashing kid. I think there's a very decent footballer in there," Ward said.
"But I've got to think about the immediate future of Carlisle United and I didn't think either of the two boys we've had on trial would help us."
Both Cameron and Robinson were withdrawn at half-time during Monday's 3-1 friendly loss against Workington Reds.
Ward is hoping the Borough Park defeat will have a positive effect on his squad for Saturday's opening game at Bristol Rovers.
"I think we've had a kick up the backside, if that can be a positive," Ward told BBC Radio Cumbria's Matchnight programme.
"The standard has dropped considerably over the last two games and we've talked about that with the players.
"I'm confident that on Saturday - and I hope I'm right - that we will see a stronger performance."
