Cardiff boss seals Taiwo signing

Cardiff City have completed the signing of Nigerian midfielder Solomon Taiwo for an estimated £250,000 from League Two side Dagenham and Redbridge.

The Championship club have been tracking the 24-year-old for some time and has impressed in the Daggers' high-flying start to League Two this season.

"He is a good prospect, a strong player, a good athlete and comfortable on the ball," said boss Dave Jones.

Taiwo, who has mainly played in non-league, has already had 10 clubs.

Taiwo is Jones' sixth summer signing following goalkeeper David Marshall, defenders Anthony Gerrard, Mark Hudson and Paul Quinn and striker Michael Chopra's arrival at the Cardiff City Stadium.

He actually played against Cardiff this season when Dagenham and Redbridge were beaten 3-1 by the Bluebirds in the first round of the Carling Cup earlier this month.

Taiwo completed his Cardiff medical on Wednesday and Jones admitted: "We have watched Solomon for the last six months.

"We've had good reports about him and he did well against us when we played Dagenham in the Carling Cup against us a few weeks ago.

"And, with no disrespect to Dagenham, playing with better players around him he should up his tempo and the qualities that he has got.

"Who knows if he is ready for the Championship? He is willing to play and wants to do well so if is given the opportunity, he should take it."

Cardiff fans fear Taiwo's signing is a replacement for talisman and Wales midfielder Joe Ledley who has been consistently linked with a host of Premier League clubs such as Everton, Stoke City West Ham United and Hull City.

But Jones insisted: "We haven't bough in a midfield player because of what might or might not happen with Joe.

"We have brought in a midfield player because we are trying to bolster our squad. Hopefully that reassures the fans."

Taiwo, who started his career at Millwall, struggled in his first few games for Dagenham and Redbridge as he was sent-off in successive games during the 2007/08 season.

But the Lagos-born player has now played 51 games - scoring six times - for the Daggers and has impressed as the lynchpin in their midfield.

Taiwo joined Dagenham and Redbridge permanently from Sutton United in the summer of 2008 after spells in the non-league at Maidenhead United, Tooting and Mitcham, Weymouth, Chesham United, Windsor and Eton and Bromley.

While the the 6ft midfielder also played football in the United States for Fort Wayne Fever in 2005.
