Cardiff strikers impress Marshall

Marshall says the likes of Cardiff striker Jay Bothroyd will terrorise defences
Marshall says the likes of Cardiff's Jay Bothroyd will terrorise defences

David Marshall believes Cardiff City possess an attacking threat that is the envy of most Championship sides.

The former Norwich goalkeeper, who joined Cardiff in May, says Michael Chopra, Jay Bothroyd and Ross McCormack have been in fine form in pre-season.

"There are 10-12 teams in this league that can realistically aim to get to the Premiership," Marshall said.

"But there's probably 20 clubs in the Championship that would bite your hand off having three strikers like that."

Marshall's fellow Scotland international McCormack has indicated he would favour a move to a Premier League club, which would also boost his international chances.

McCormack, who signed a new four-year contract at the Bluebirds last month, has this week said he was "happy" to stay at Cardiff even though he may not be first choice or may have to play out of position.

The 22-year-old has been told by Cardiff that, despite being their top-scorer last season, he will not be guaranteed a regular first-team place with Chopra and Bothroyd also in contention.

Manager Dave Jones prefers to use two strikers but Marshall, who signed from relegated Norwich at the end of last season for a fee believed to be £300,000, says he is happy with any of the trio up front.

"Obviously the way we've played in pre-season it's only been the two up front but they all look sharp," added Marshall.

"They've had experience at a higher level as well... so any of the three if they play they will look dangerous and obviously they can all score goals at this level.

"So it's good to have them and I'm just hoping all of them can stay in and stay fit for the full season."

While Marshall was involved in a relegation dogfight with Norwich last season, he saw enough as an opposition player to know he has joined a club that should again be a force in the Championship.

"Hopefully Cardiff will be up the right end of the season and pushing towards the Premiership," Marshall said.

"Last season, as everybody expected, I thought they were going to make the play-offs at the very least, it came as a bit of a shock when they didn't.

"So I know the quality here and playing with the boys and working with the boys you can tell it's a high standard."

Marshall will contest the Cardiff goalkeeper's jersey with Peter Enckelman, with the Finland international having recovered from the knee injury that kept him out of much of last season.
