Cambridge United caretaker boss Jez George has revealed that he has spoken with two potential candidates about the vacant manager's position.
The U's have lost three of their four matches under George, who is also a director at the Abbey Stadium.
He told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I know this process needs to be accelerated given our results.
"We need to try and speed the process up, but we cannot afford to make a panic appointment."
George was initially expected to see out the season as U's boss, but has admitted they now plan to make a appointment sooner.
"I'm sifting through some applicants and I've met a couple of people already just to see what their ethos might be," he said.
Martin Ling was sacked as U's boss after a 4-0 defeat away to Bath City at the end of January.
George has reiterated that he has no desire to take permanent charge at the Abbey, but is adamant that they cannot afford any rash moves.
"My remit is to be caretaker manager at this club until we find the right person and also to help find that person," he said.
"My personal view is that this cannot be a short-term appointment. We need the right person to take this club forward into next season and beyond."
