Former Lincoln City boss John Schofield has been given the chance to prove his worth as a coach at Cambridge United.
The 45-year-old took charge of Monday's training session under the watchful eye of manager Martin Ling and player-assistant manager Paul Carden.
Carden told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We do need another body on the coaching staff.
"The lads have responded really positively to him. He's got loads of experience at different levels."
He added: "We're lucky to have had this opportunity to work with him and it's so far so good.
"But it's not just about whether the gaffer wants John, it's whether it suits John.

"We're three days in. We'll give it a bit of time for us to work together."
Schofield was appointed Lincoln caretaker-manager in the summer of 2006 before taking the job full-time at the end of that season.
It turned out to be a short stint as he was sacked in October 2007 and went on to take coaching roles at Scunthorpe, Walsall and Cheltenham Town.
Ling told the club's website: "Both myself and John know each other through training courses.
"Having not worked together before we think it's best to assess our strengths and weaknesses and see if it's a match that will benefit the club."
