Ling has been given his budget by the Cambridge board

Cambridge United manager Martin Ling says he already has an idea of the players he wants to sign this summer.

The U's are set to reveal a handful of new recruits at the Abbey before a charity game on 10 May.

Ling told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "I know who the players are and work has to be done.

"I don't think it has to start when the season's over, if you want to be ahead of the game you've got some time to be forward thinking."

Ling has made it clear that winger Courtney Pitt, striker Mark Beesley and midfielder Ben Farrell, who are all out on loan, will not have their contracts renewed for next season.

The rest of the side have the remainder of the season to prove their worth to the former Leyton Orient boss, who plans to have players' futures sorted by 10 May.

It is a date that coincides with director of football Jez George's charity game, to raise awareness of the lack of funds for non-league youth academies.

For Ling, it is an opportunity to showcase his early signings: "It will show people who I plan to keep from the current squad.

"There's going to be some new players in this building but there certainly isn't going to be the finished squad in early May.

"There will still be some finer details to do at the end of May as well but there will be new players on show within that game."

Ling has already had mixed success with signings in his first season.

Brian Saah, Aiden Palmer and Simon Brown and loan signings Simon Russell and Scott Neilsen have all become first team regulars.
