Stadium talks ongoing - Gautrey

Cambridge United

Cambridge United have confirmed that talks with the landlords of the Abbey Stadium are ongoing as the U's consider where to play their future home games.

The U's have rented the Abbey for the past four years after selling it to Bideawhile in 2004.

Chief executive Norman Gautrey told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "We are working on three or four different fronts.

"It would be wrong of me to get peoples' hopes up, hopefully we will be able to do something soon."

The 200,000 per-year rent the United pay is set to rise next year.

The club's board are considering a number of different solutions to the problem, including buying back the stadium or relocating elsewhere in the city.

Gautrey believes the U's will be in a much stronger position should they be promoted back to the Football League and said the club will invest in the playing squad in January if promotion is a possibility.

"I think the squad is better in theory than it was at this stage last year," said Gautrey.

"But we'll look at it again in January and if there is a realistic chance of us getting into the play-offs and [Manager] Gary Brabin wants to strengthen we will have a look at it."
