Bristol Rovers are keen to sign Paul Heffernan, who spent two months on loan at The Memorial Stadium this season, on a long-term deal.
Manager Paul Trollope has already spoken to the striker's agent following his release by Doncaster Rovers.
Trollope told BBC Radio Bristol: "I'm sure he will have options and there will be competition for his signature.
"But he is somebody of great interest to us and we are in discussions with his agent."
The 28-year-old striker scored four goals in 10 appearances for Rovers before being recalled by injury-hit Doncaster in April.
"We were very impressed with Paul when he was here," said Trollope. "He's a good link man and made us a better team with his hold-up play.
"His attitude was excellent too, and his work ethic was very good. He fitted into the group well."
Heffernan signed for Bristol City in a £150,000 transfer from Notts County in 2004. He then joined Doncaster for a fee of £125,000 in the summer of 2005, scoring 35 goals in 126 games.
