Trego celebrates reaching three figures at Old Trafford |
Peter Trego hit the fastest first-class century of the season so far to give Somerset the advantage over Lancashire after three days at Old Trafford. Beginning on 155-4, 137 behind, Somerset lost Jos Buttler early before Trego (108) and James Hildreth (99) shared a sixth-wicket stand of 186. Trego reached 100 from just 83 balls, but when he fell Somerset slipped from 343-5 to 383 all out, a lead of 91. Lancashire moved to 32-0 before bad light and rain ended play at 1630 BST. When Buttler lost his off stump shouldering arms to Glen Chapple (3-146), Somerset were in trouble at 157-5. But Trego, who had already hit two half centuries in five previous Championship innings played positively from the start and made Lancashire pay for dropping simple chances when he was on 22 and 40, both off the bowling of Daren Powell. He reached 50 from 57 balls and took just 26 more to reach three figures but finally fell to Powell, top-edging a pull to Chapple. Hildreth fell agonisingly short of a century of his own when he pushed nervously at Chapple and was caught behind, before the Somerset tail folded meekly. Openers Luke Sutton and Stephen Moore guided the hosts to the early close, leaving all of Lancashire's 10 wickets intact for a final day where survival can be the only realistic goal.
