James Franklin hit nine fours and one six in his unbeaten 92 |
James Franklin and Vikram Banerjee took Gloucestershire to a three-day victory over Surrey at The Oval. Franklin moved from 37 overnight to an unbeaten 92 to push the visitors from 139-7 to 248 all out. The New Zealand all-rounder was supported by Gemaal Hussain (22) in a ninth-wicket stand of 70 as Gloucestershire set Surrey 300 to win. Banerjee then took 5-74 and Hussain 2-74 as Surrey were shot out for just 222 to lose by 77 runs. Gloucestershire were only 190 ahead at the beginning of the day but Franklin, who also added 42 with Banerjee for the eighth-wicket, helped them post what would prove to be a winning target. He hit nine fours and a six before he eventually ran out of partners just eight runs short of an 11th first-class century. Surrey got off to a bad start when Gareth Batty edged behind off Steve Kirby and there hopes of victory virtually disappeared when Franklin accounted for Mark Ramprakash in similar fashion. Banerjee then got in the act to have Arun Harinath (38) caught at short leg, before captain Rory Hamilton-Brown chipped Jon Lewis to midwicket for a duck. Wicketkeeper Steven Davies offered some resistance with 54 from just 35 balls, which was followed up by a ninth-wicket stand of 49 between Chris Tremlett (31) and Rao Iftikhar Anjum (29). Rao Iftikhar was dropped twice in the same Banerjee over but would eventually be the last man out, caught at slip off the same bowler, as Surrey slipped to their third Championship defeat in four games.
