LV COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, The Oval: CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Gloucestershire 229, Surrey 5x-1 Surrey 3pts, Glos 1pt Match scorecard
Tremlett joined Surrey from Hampshire over the winter |
Former England fast bowler Chris Tremlett marked his Surrey debut with 4-35 as Gloucestershire were bowled out for 229 on day one at The Oval. Tremlett, whose early Surrey career has been hampered by a groin injury after leaving Hampshire, struck twice early on to leave the visitors 15-3. But wicketkeeper Stephen Snell (48) led the recovery to help the visitors secure a single batting bonus point. Surrey lost makeshift opener Gareth Batty (31) as they closed on 56-1. Batty, opening because Stewart Walters has a back injury, hit six fours before being bowled by Gemaal Hussain in the penultimate over, leaving Tremlett to see the day out as nightwatchman. That ended a fine first day in Surrey colours for Tremlett, who finished with his best figures since taking 5-67 for Hampshire against Surrey at the Rose Bowl in May 2008. He was soon in the action after Iftikhar Anjum had Jonathan Batty caught behind in the first over. Tremlett had Hamish Marshall caught at second slip off his second ball and Alex Gidman caught at square leg in his next over to leave Gloucestershire reeling. And after Gareth Batty had trapped Chris Dent leg before to end a fourth-wicket partnership of 48 with James Franklin, Tremlett claimed Chris Taylor lbw. When Iftikhar and Chris Schofield removed Franklin and Jon Lewis respectively, the visitors were 127-7. But Snell and Vikram Banerjee added 52 and Banerjee and Steve Kirby 42 for the last wicket to give Gloucestershire respectability either side of Tremlett pinning Hussain lbw for his fourth scalp.
