Bristol City offer Iriekpen deal

Bristol City hope to add ex-Scunthorpe United defender Izzy Iriekpen to their squad on a short-term contract.

The 26-year-old, who began his career at West Ham and joined Scunthorpe from Swansea in 2007, had been expected to sign for Hamilton after agreeing terms.

But after a trial with the Robins he is now set to be offered a deal to stay at Ashton Gate to the end of the season.

"If he accepts it then he'll be part of our immediate future," boss Gary Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol.

City are stretched in central defence with Jamie McCombe sidelined after surgery on a stomach and pelvis injury and his absence leaves Johnson's options limited if Louis Carey or Liam Fontaine pick up an injury.

"At this moment in time we need bodies in that particular area and Izzy gives you aggression and experience," added Johnson.

"I think he's liked what he's seen and he's liked being a part of it and wants to give it a go and try and earn himself a long-term contract."

Iriekpen's Iron contract was terminated by mutual consent earlier in January after he was stripped of the captaincy and put on the transfer list in December.
