Brighton's Adam El-Abd has signed a new two-year deal to stay with Micky Adams' Albion until the summer of 2010.
He told BBC Southern Counties Radio: "I'm happy with the deal. There was a lot to consider and a lot of negotiation to do."
An apprentice during Adams' first spell at the club, El-Abd added: "I've heard he's hard but fair. I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead."
The 23-year-old utility player was out of contract this summer.
The home grown El-Abd - who can play across the back four or in central midfield - says there is now fierce competition at the centre half slot following the arrival of Colin Hawkins from Coventry City.
"It does look strong," he said. "There's a lot of competition - everyone competing for places is a good thing."
