McCall led Bradford to eight league wins from 27 games this season
Bradford City boss Stuart McCall has resigned as manager of the mid-table League Two club.
McCall met with joint-chairman Julian Rhodes on Monday to discuss his future after Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Bury left them 16th in the table.
"It's coming to a stage now where it is time for somebody new to come in. It's just not meant to be," McCall told BBC Radio Leeds after the Shakers defeat.
Assistant Wayne Jacobs is to take temporary charge of the club.
The 45-year-old took over at Valley Parade in May 2007 and threatened to leave at the end of last season after Bradford failed to make the play-offs.
Saturday's defeat by Bury was their sixth at home this season and left the Bantams 12 points outside the play-off places.
And McCall believes the signs were there that it is time for him to walk away.
"I just think it's time now to get a lucky manager in. He might not be the best manager but if he can be lucky that would be good for the club," he said.
"The players have merited more points than we have got this season and we should be ninth or 10th, three or four points off the play-offs and unfortunately we're not.
"I'm hurt because I wanted to be a success here and the bottom line is I haven't been.
"It's not been for a lack of effort and I couldn't have had more support from the players, staff, Julian as the chairman and the fans.
"If there was anywhere I wanted to succeed it was here. I had two great spells here as a player but the dream I had of being a manager and getting success has not come off."
A statement on the club website read: "The club would like to place on record its appreciation for Stuart's efforts as manager over the past two years and seven months.
"During this time he has worked tirelessly and no one is more disappointed that his endeavours have not been rewarded with more success on the field than Stuart himself.
"Stuart will always have a special place in the hearts of our fans for the dedication and passion he has consistently shown to Bradford City, starting with two highly successful spells as a player with the club.
"The board would like to thank Stuart who, in recognition of the financial position of the club, has accepted a settlement in lieu of the remaining period of his contract that is reasonable, affordable and by no means as much as he could have been entitled to."
