Boston United have suspended manager Steve Evans pending an internal club inquiry.

The move comes a week after the FA announced a series of charges against the Pilgrims, Evans and former chairman Pat Malkinson concerning "contract irregularities".

The club have also confirmed that Pat Malkinson is stepping down as a director.

Assistant Manager Neil Thompson has taken temporary control of team affairs.

Boston chairman Des Wood said: "The club is taking these charges very seriously and has instigated its own internal investigation.

"Pending the outcome of these investigations, Steve Evans has been suspended from his duties.

"We have co-operated fully with the FA inquiry and are committed to upholding FA rules.

"Media reports have referred to 'financial irregularities' so I want to make it very clear that no dishonesty or criminal conduct has been alleged against the club."

The controversy has taken the shine off Boston's promotion to the Football League last season.

Wood added: "Our focus remains on playing a proper part in the Football League during the forthcoming season."
