Barnsley will try to re-sign defender Ryan Shotton from Premier League club Stoke City.
Another loan deal is the most likely option for the 21-year-old, who made 30 appearances for the Reds last season.
"I want a centre half who can play possibly right back," Barnsley manager Mark Robins told BBC Radio Sheffield.
"There's Ryan Shotton, so I might go back to Stoke for him. It's unusual for me to talk about it in the press but that's what I'm going to do."
