Barnsley are hoping to sign Iceland international Emil Hallfredsson on a season-long loan after agreeing a deal with Italian Serie A club Reggina.
If the 25-year-old midfielder is a hit at Oakwell, the club aim to make the move permanent next summer.
"We are now discussing terms with Emil and hopefully that will be concluded soon," said Tykes manager Simon Davey.
Hallfredsson has previously had spells with Tottenham, Swedish club Malmo and Norwegian side Lyn.
Barnsley have also had bids accepted for Liverpool's Adam Hammill and Jamaica international O'Neil Thompson, although they face competition from Leeds for Hammill.
And Davey is continuing his pursuit of Charlton striker Andy Gray, who cannot move back to South Yorkshire, where he previously played for Sheffield United, until the takeover of the League One side is completed.
