COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP DIVISION TWO, Whitgift School:
CLOSE OF PLAY, DAY ONE: Surrey 308-3
(Surrey 3pts, Derbys 1pt)
6-9 August 2009

Michael Brown struck 18 fours in his 248-ball 120

Michael Brown hit 120 and Mark Ramprakash 80 to help Surrey take the upper hand over Derbyshire on day one at Whitgift School.

The pair shared a second-wicket stand of 162, but fell within three balls of each other shortly before the close.

Brown was caught at cover off Nantie Hayward (2-44), while Ramprakash was bowled by Tim Groenewald (1-31).

Earlier, Brown had shared an opening stand of 113 with Jon Batty (48) as the hosts closed the day on 308-3.

After Surrey won the toss, Batty was twice dropped in the slips by Madsen off the bowling of Hayward and Groenewald respectively.

The hosts reached 105-0 at lunch, but Batty was to fall shortly after the break when he cut Hayward to Greg Smith on the deep backward point boundary.

Ramprakash, who passed 1,000 first-class runs for the season, soon settled and he and Brown took the score 208-1 at tea.

But both men fell with the score on 275 before captain Stewart Walters and Usman Afzaal took the visitors to the close.
