Pires hints at new Gunners deal

Robert Pires has given the strongest indication yet that he will sign a contract extension to stay at Arsenal.

The midfielder, 32, has been offered a one-year deal by the Gunners but is free to talk to other clubs as his present deal expires in the summer.

"We have a new generation with huge potential. If I can act as a guide it will be with pleasure," Pires said.

Agreement has, in principle, also been reached with keeper Jens Lehmann over extending his deal beyond the summer.

Arsenal only offer players aged over 30 one-year extensions, and while Lehmann has been happy to go along with that policy Pires has stalled on signing a new contract in preference for a two-year deal.

However, it seems as if the French World Cup winner has softened his stance and, as well as the young players coming through under Arsene Wenger, he is excited by the club's move to a new home at Emirates Stadium.

"About the new stadium - it is a new step," he told France Football magazine.

"By leaving Highbury, Arsenal will be able to compete with the biggest clubs in Europe.

"Being part of that new story is a very positive thing. Now it is up to the coach to make the decision.

"Today the officials proposed to me a one-year contract, the Dennis Bergkamp formula, which means one year, plus one year, plus one year."

Wenger has previously hinted he may compromise over the length of the new deal in order to retain the player.

"You can always have exceptions. He is an important player," Wenger said.

"He has always been a big part of our team. He is in and out at the moment but you expect that during this period and at that age sometimes as well you need a breather."
