Pires will stay, says boss Wenger
Pires (left) and Wenger cannot agree on a new contract
Arsene Wenger is confident that winger Robert Pires will stay at Arsenal - despite there being no agreement in sight over the Frenchman's contract.

Pires, 31, has one year left on his current deal and wants a two-year extension, but the Gunners are only offering him one more year.

"At the moment the situation is quite stable," said Wenger, as the player continued to be linked to Galatasaray.

"We have no interest in him from anybody and we want him to stay."

Pires' agent has insisted the French winger would not be joining Galatasaray - but admitted Juventus was an attractive option.

However, the Turkish club said that was not the case.

"I can't say the transfer is a done deal but there's a 50% chance," said Ozhan Canaydin, the Galatasaray president.

I can understand that he wants an improved contract, but it has nothing to do with Patrick leaving
Arsene Wenger

"We've made good progress. Pires has three offers on the table and we're the last one."

However, agent Stephane Courbis told Turkish newspaper Vatan: "Galatasaray? We haven't got an offer from that club.

"Right now Juventus is the only interested party. It is not possible Pires can go to any club in Turkey."

Juve would see Pires link up with France team-mate Patrick Vieira, who left Arsenal for Turin in a 13.75m switch this summer.

But with Lyon and Valencia also said to be watching the situation, Wenger is confident Pires will go nowhere.

"I can understand that he wants an improved contract, but it has nothing to do with Patrick leaving.

"Robert has always been very important to us but he does not play in the same position as Patrick - although he can.

"My situation is very clear: I want him to stay. But I cannot stop there being interest from other clubs or speculation."
