Aldershot striker John Grant admitted he is sad to leave the club but stressed he no longer wants to watch the action from the bench.

The 28-year-old has joined Blue Square Premier leaders Oxford United on loan until the end of the season.

He told BBC Surrey: "I've had some good times here, I've enjoyed every moment but I don't want it to fizzle out.

"It's always sad to leave but everyone has their time. Everyone's going to leave, it's just my moment now."

He added: "The manager made it quite clear who he wants out of the club so I don't want to stay somewhere I'm not wanted.

"Everyone will have their moment in their time but it's my time to go and I'll have fond memories of the place.

"The club are fighting for promotion and I wish the lads well, they are all my friends out there, the lads and all the supporters. I wish them well and hope that they can get promotion for the supporters and for themselves, for their own careers."

Grant scored 57 goals in 150 games, including 25 in the Shots' Blue Square Premier promotion-winning season.

But he only managed eight goals in 52 League Two appearances.

He said his best moment was getting the Conference trophy.

Grant said: "Just seeing the joy on the peoples' faces, they'd been waiting a long time so that's probably the best moment.

"The fans have been fantastic. They are the heartbeat of the club. They support the club through thick and thin, they travel miles, and put in good money for the club.

"It's a family club and as long as we've got fans like that we'll be successful."
