Grassi suffered his injury during Tuesday's defeat by Dundee
Recent Aberdeen signing Davide Grassi has been ruled out for "an extended period" after suffering a triple cheekbone fracture.
The 23-year-old picked up the injury early during Tuesday's Co-operative Insurance Cup defeat by Dundee after a head clash with defender David Cowan.
Grassi was signed as a replacement for Sone Aluko on the left of midfield.
Aluko could be missing for up to a month as he is in the Nigeria squad for the Under-20 World Cup in Egypt.
The tournament lasts until 16 October and Tuesday's game against Dundee, when the Dons lost 3-2 to the First Division side, was the first in Aluko's absence.
Grassi, a product of Parma's youth system, signed a one-year contract with Aberdeen in August after impressing on trial.
Manager Mark McGhee handed the Italian his first start in Saturday's 1-0 win over St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League as he prepared for Aluko's departure.
McGhee had played him on the left, with Aluko moving to a more forward role, and the manager remarked that he thought Grassi would prove a good replacement for the Nigeria international.
Aberdeen did not want to speculate about the likely length of Grassi's absence.
