| Saturday, 10 August, 2002, 16:41 GMT 17:41 UK Rangers demolish Dundee ![]() Ronald de Boer was on target for Rangers Rangers 3-0 Dundee Rangers cruised to a comfortable win over Dundee after technical problems lead to a 50 minute delay to the Ibrox kick off. When play did get underway the home side, inspired by Ronald de Boer and Mikel Arteta, in midfield were far too strong for their opponents. De Boer opened the scoring with a header and second half goals from Shota Averladze and Peter Lovenkrands added polish to the scoreline. Power supply problems with the electronically-operated turnstyles, which were supposed to speed fans into the ground using a credit card-style pass key meant a delayed kick-off. Rangers handed a competitive debut to summer signing Kevin Muscat and recalled striker Tore Andre Flo. Fabian Caballero found himself on the Dundee bench with Steve Milne preferred up front. Rangers, playing in their tangerine change shirts, fashioned a chance in the fifth minute when Barry Ferguson sent Fernando Ricksen away down the right and de Boer was able to tee up Flo for a shot. The Norwegian let fly but Lee Wilkie threw himself in the way to make a vital block. The home side broke the deadlock after 12 minutes when Arteta swung a corner into a crowded six-yard box and de Boer flicked a front post header over the line.
Arthur Numan misjudged the ball's bounce inside the Dundee half and the Spaniard was able to hare away from him before by-passing Lorenzo Amoruso on his way to goal but an ambitious lofted effort floated over the bar. Gavin Rae tripped Arteta 30 yards in front of goal and Ricksen forced a good save out of Julian Speroni at the expense of a corner. A Ferguson free-kick found its way through a cluster of players to Muscat in the box and the Australian's weak header was almost crept in before Wilkie hacked away. He did so only as far as Arveladze but the Georgian blasted high over. De Boer set Arveladze up for a drive and it needed a spectacular Speroni tip over to deny him. Yet Dundee were still in the game and Milne's first touch let him down when Giorgi Nemsadze threaded a ball through the home defence. In the 67th minute Arveladze at last wrapped up the points for his side. Muscat played the ball towards Flo's feet and Wilkie missed an essential interception. The ball was quickly moved on to the unmarked Arveladze, who was able to take a couple of touches before drilling past Speroni. In the closing stages Rangers launched attack after attack in the direction of Speroni. Flo was unlucky to see his low angled drive hit the woodwork and bounce back into the arms of the prone goalkeeper. Substitute Lovenkrands made it 3-0 in the 88th minute when he raced clear of the tired Dundee defence to drill home a low shot. Rangers: Klos, Muscat, Moore, Amoruso, Numan, Ricksen, Ferguson, Arteta, de Boer (Lovenkrands 77), Flo, Arveladze. Dundee: Speroni, Smith, Wilkie, MacKay, Hernandez Santos, Rae, Nemsadze, Mair (Robb 71), Milne, Sara, Novo (Caballero 71). Att: 47,044 |
