Stockport defender Ashley Williams is rated highly by John Toshack

The 23-year-old County captain has been watched by Wales boss John Toshack and could earn his first call for the 26 March friendly in Luxembourg.

"I think Toshack will be suitably impressed with the outstanding contribution of Williams," said Gannon.

"Although we might lose him for one league game, we're really looking forward to him getting a call-up."

Toshack was at Edgar Street on Saturday to run the rule over County's centre-back during their 1-0 League Two win over Hereford.

The veteran Wales coach, who regularly picks League Two players such as Wrexham's Steve Evans, announces his squad for the Luxembourg game on 17 March.

The uncapped Williams is set for a call as cover for regular centre-back partnership Danny Gabbidon and James Collins as the West Ham pair are injured.

Williams was born and raised in The Midlands but is qualified to play for Wales due to his grandfather from the Rhondda Valleys.

Cardiff City and Luton Town both had �500,000 bids rejected by Stockport for the highly-rated West Brom trainee last summer.
