Midfielder Michael Collins was released by Crusaders in May

Donegal Celtic's hopes of signing combative midfielder Michael Collins have been dashed after the player decided to retire.

New DC manager Marty Tabb held talks with the former Portadown, Newry City, Cliftonville and Crusaders player.

Collins, 33, was released by Crusaders in May after spending four months at the Seaview outfit.

The player regularly fell foul of referees on but was a highly talented performer when in the mood.

While Collins will not be joining Donegal Celtic, Daniel Lyons and Thomas McCann may both make returns to the club.

Lyons, who also had a previous spell at Cliftonville, is training with the club again after retiring from football last year while Antrim GAA player McCann is also hoping to sign for DC.

Paul Carville may also be part of Tabb's plans for the coming season after being released by Glenavon while former Linfield midfielder Paul McAreavey could feature for the club after Christmas.

McAreavey is currently ruled out by a hip injury.

Tabb says he is impressed with the commitment and fitness levels of his squad.

"We started pre-season early because there is a recognition that we need to step up a level in terms of fitness for the Premiership," said Tabb.

"My door is open for players who believe they can offer Donegal Celtic something in the Premiership, which is why we have welcomed in the likes of Lyons, Carville and McCann.

"I sense a good team spirit and a determination to succeed and the players who got the team into the Premiership will be rewarded with my recognition."
