Goalscorer Mark Holland also hit the woodwork |
Cliftonville claimed a 1-0 second leg victory over Latvian club FC Dinaburg to earn a 2-1 aggregate success in the Intertoto Cup first round tie. Mark Holland struck the Cliftonville goal in the sixth minute and the Reds striker also hit the Dinaburg woodwork.
The victory earns Cliftonville a money-spinning second-round clash against Belgium outfit Ghent.
The first leg is scheduled for 7 July in Belgium with the second leg at Windsor Park a week later.
Holland beat Dinaburg goalkeeper Fevgenisis Laizans with a fine header after George McMullan lobbed a Sean Friars cross into the striker's path.
In the second half, Holland forced a smart save from Fevgenisis, Ronan Scannell hit an effort over the bar and then Holland struck the post on 61 minutes.
Vincent Sweeney forced a wonderful save from Valjuskins in injury-time and then Dinaburg were reduced to ten men for the second game in the tie.
Artem Iashkin was red-carded in added time.
"Without a doubt, we deserved to win. We were well on top and it's fantastic," said Cliftonville manager Eddie Patterson after the final whistle.
"We had one or two silly moments but they had five or six and we did a very professional job against a full-time outfit.
"The boys have worked really hard, we could have won by more and we will put just as much effort into the next round against Ghent.
"We will try to do a bit of homework on them over the next week to find out more about them," said the Reds boss.
