Pat Fenlon's Shelbourne beat Hajduk Split 4-3 on aggregate |
Shelbourne's Champions League third qualifying round home leg against Deportivo La Coruna will be played at Lansdowne Road next Wednesday. The club decided to move the game from Tolka Park because the bigger Lansdowne Road capacity will enable them to generate an additional 100,000 Euro.
Deportivo were scheduled to have home advantage in their first leg but have agreed to travel to Dublin instead.
The Eircom League champions shocked Hajduk Split on Wednesday evening.
Manager Pat Fenlon wanted to have the home game at Tolka Park but, club officials have said, that the boss has reluctantly accepted the decision.
"It's only natural that the lads in the team would have wanted it at Tolka Park but ultimately it's a business decision taken in the overall context of the club's best interests," said Shelbourne chairman Finbarr Flood.
With Spanish TV rights also coming into play in additional to gate receipts, Shelbourne could earn as much as 500,000 Euro from the Deportivo tie.
Wednesday's 2-0 victory over Hajduk earned a 4-3 aggregate win over the Croats and set up a money-spinning tie with last season's Champions League semi-finalists.
Shelbourne became the first Irish team to make the third qualifying round of the Champions League and Fenlon was thrilled with his side's performance.
"It's amazing for us. I did expect us to win if we stuck to our game plan.
"We have the players here who are disciplined to stick to the plan.
"We thought that if we got to 65 or 70 minutes, they would be nervous and it worked."
Dave Rogers and Alan Moore scored the goals which overturned the 3-2 deficit from the first leg in Croatia.
Rogers scored with a superb volley on 77 minutes and Moore netted from close-range in stoppage-time after brilliant work from Cameroon international Joseph Ndo.
