Hajduk Split's Petar Suto contests a header with Ollie Cahill |
Shelbourne are through to a Champions League meeting with Deportivo La Coruna after beating Hajduk Split in the second preliminary round. Dave Rogers and Alan Moore scored the goals which gave the Eircom League title holders a 2-0 victory on the night, 4-3 on aggregate.
Shelbourne are the first Irish club to reach the third qualifying round.
Rogers scored with a superb volley on 77 minutes and Moore netted from close-range in stoppage-time.
It was the first time the Dublin side had won at their Tolka Park home in European competition since 1993.
Even if Shelbourne lose to last season's semi-finalists Deportivo, the result guarantees the Dublin club a place in the Uefa Cup.
Pat Fenlon's team are scheduled to be away to the Spanish giants on Wednesday 11 August with the home leg two weeks later.
However, Shelbourne are likely to ask the Spanish club to switch the dates and there is a possibility that the Irish club's home league could be staged at Lansdowne Road next Wednesday because of Tolka Park's small crowd capacity.
Defender Rogers became the Shelbourne hero when he found the net with a sweetly-struck left-foot shot from 20 yards.
It was a first goal of the season for Rogers, a 28-year-old Liverpudlian whose previous clubs include Carlisle, Scunthorpe, Peterborough, Partick, Ayr, Dundee, Chester and Tranmere.
Moore made absolutely sure of Irish success with a tap-in goal as Split were caught pushing forward.
Before Rogers' opener, it had looked like time might be running out for the Shels as they were denied by some good saves from Split keeper Tvrtko Kale.
The 30-year-old keeper pulled off a couple of fine stops from Glen Fitzpatrick and Moore midway through the first half as Shelbourne enjoyed a good spell of pressure.
