Derry City 4-1 Monaghan Town

Derry City secured a quarter-final place in the Eircom League Cup by beating Monaghan Town 4-1 at the Brandywell on Tuesday.

Kevin Mahon's side went into the game needing to beat Monaghan by three clear goals to pip neighbours Finn Harps for the last eight spot.

Strikes from Gary Beckett, Padraig Moran, Gareth McGlynn and a Stephen Gifford own goal ensured that Derry got the decisive three-goal margin.

Beckett, who hit the late winner in Thursday's league win over Cork, opened the scoring in the 25th minute by turning in a Peter Hutton cross.

Hutton supplied the cross for Derry's second goal 10 minutes later with Gifford diverting the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Padraig Moran made it 3-0 seven minutes before the break.

Derry's prospects of earning a quarter-final place were briefly threatened when Peter Hutton turned the ball into his own net two minutes from time.

However, Gareth McGlynn's 90th minute effort made the outcome safe for Derry.
