Mahon's side have claimed seven points from their last three games |
Derry City 1-0 Cork City
Gary Beckett's superb injury-time goal earned Derry a dramatic victory over a disappointing Cork outfit at the Brandywell on Thursday night.
Kevin Mahon's side thoroughly deserved the three points against an unimaginative Leeside line-up.
Derry have now taken seven points from their last three games which has helped to undo some of the damage after four opening defeats.
Neither side looked particularly impressive in the first half but Derry improved significantly after the interval.
Early in the second period, Sean Friars was denied by a fine O'Brien save.
Then Eamon Doherty saw a header hit the woodwork and roll agonisingly along the Cork goal-line.
Derry continued to press against a Cork team whose long-ball tactics rarely troubled the home defence.
The game seemed certain to end in stalemate but Beckett won the game with his glorious late strike.
