| Tuesday, 19 November, 2002, 09:32 GMT Vogts blasts O'Neill ![]() Vogts suggests that O'Neill should stick to his own job Scotland coach Berti Vogts has hit back at Celtic boss Martin O'Neill's claim that international games are clogging up a busy club season. O'Neill suggested that Vogts should organise more squad get-togethers rather than take Scotland away on foreign trips such as Wednesday's friendly in Portugal. But Vogts hit back by insisting he has already made sure players have been allowed to recharge their batteries.
The exchange is the latest chapter in an uneasy relationship between the national coach and the Old Firm. A potential clash with Rangers over the fitness of Barry Ferguson was averted, with the player staying at home. But Vogts has made it clear he does not appreciate O'Neill's comments and took a swipe at the shortage of Scottish players in the Parkhead side. He said: "I need to see Scottish players on the pitch and give them experience at the very highest level. "I don't like the coaches of Celtic and Rangers talking about the national team like this. "I do my job for the SFA and I'd prefer that he (Martin O'Neill) does his job for Celtic.
Vogts added: "Look at how many Scottish players were on the pitch at Blackburn last week. Only Robert Douglas in goal and then Paul Lambert coming on later. "I don't understand that. I need to see my players as much as possible. The German also fended off criticism that he is over-taxing players by arranging too many international matches He said "After the Germany match on 12 June we had an invitation from another big nation, from Argentina - but I said no. "The players should go on holiday." |
